What is the Socratic method?
Two and a half thousand years old and still the most powerful teaching technique we have. Here's how the Socratic method works — and how AI can use it.
The Socratic method is teaching by disciplined questioning. Instead of telling students what to think, you ask questions that lead them to examine their own reasoning, expose contradictions, and arrive at understanding themselves.
How it works
- Ask an open question that requires reasoning, not recall.
- Probe the answer — 'why?', 'what if?', 'how do you know?'
- Surface contradictions gently, so the student notices the gap.
- Let the student rebuild a stronger understanding in their own words.
Why it works
Understanding that you construct yourself is far stickier than understanding you're handed. The Socratic method forces active thinking, reveals misconceptions, and builds the habit of reasoning — the skill that outlasts any single fact.
Its one limitation
It's hard to scale. One teacher can't run a deep Socratic dialogue with 30 students at once — there isn't enough time or attention to go around. This is exactly where AI helps.
How AI can use the Socratic method
A well-designed AI classmate can hold a Socratic dialogue with every student simultaneously — asking, probing, and pushing each one to reason — while the teacher supervises and steps in where it matters. Saya is built on this idea: it asks the questions you don't have time to ask, for every student, every lesson.
